NFL Draft
Results in Busy Month for CI Legal Team
Every April makes for a busy month for CI's business affairs staff.
CI handled many enforcement related matters around this year's NFL
Draft including unauthorized usage by various regional television
networks and internet companies. CI's proactive measures to educate
and enforce its partners' rights lead to increased awareness and
partner revenues in this area. Each year, CI's NFL Draft clientele
continues to grow. Thank you for your participation and support in
this year's efforts.
C-SPAN Has Video Pulled From YouTube & IFILM
In addition to E-bay being on the "watch"
list, you might want to add both YouTube and IFILM.
C-SPAN recently aired the White House Correspondents Dinner, which
included a performance by comedian Stephen Colbert.
Shortly after the C-SPAN copyrighted event aired, Colbert's segment
showed on both YouTube and IFILM websites.
C-SPAN contacted the two websites because the copyrighted material
was posted online without its permission. Both YouTube and
IFILM complied with the request and the video was removed. |

Great Games:
Football
USC vs. California (September 27, 2003)
(Berkeley, CA) Cal’s Tyler Fredrickson made a
38-yard field goal to end a third overtime battle as California
upset No. 3 Southern California 34-31. The upset ended the Trojans’
11-game winning streak with a victory that stretched past dusk and
decades of history. Ryan Killeen, who tied the game with a 33-yard
field goal for the Trojans with 16 seconds left in regulation,
missed a 39-yard field goal moments before Fredrickson’s kick.
Golden Bears QB Reggie Robertson relieved starting QB Aaron Rogers
in the third quarter and passed for 217 yards and two scores, while
RB Adimchinobe Echemandu rushed for 147 yards. Trojans QB Matt
Leinart overcame a shaky start to go 21-of-39 for 277 yards, but was
intercepted three times. WR Mike Williams had six receptions for 96
yards, while WR Keary Colbert had eight catches for 81 yards and an
overtime TD, who overcame a 14-point second-half deficit.

Great Highlight Footage:
Kenny Smith, Guard, University of North Carolina
Current TNT NBA basketball analyst Kenny Smith
had a storied career at the University of North Carolina and CI has
a five-minute highlight showcasing his collegiate career.
The sixth player selected in the 1987 NBA Draft's first round by the
Sacramento Kings, Smith was the starting point guard for two seasons
in which the Tar Heels went a perfect 14-0 in the ACC. In 1987 he
earned first-team All-America honors averaging
16.9 points per game and dishing out 209 assists. Smith holds
UNC's career assist record with 768, including 86 assists in NCCA
Tournament play.

Shaquille O'Neal, Center - LSU

Shaquille O’Neal has been
one of the most
dominant and popular athletes in history. At LSU, he was a two-time first-team All-American, two-time
SEC player of the year, the national player of the year
in 1991 and still holds the single game record for
blocked shots in a game, swatting an amazing 17 against
Mississippi State in 1990. In the NBA, Shaq was named
one of the top 50 players of all-time and led
the Los Angeles Lakers to three-consecutive NBA
Championships. CI’s still image library includes photos
of O’Neal at LSU dunking over a variety of opponents,
attempting a short-jumper and defending the basket on
defense.

NCAA
CURRENT STUDENT-ATHLETES PHOTO SALES
The proposed legislation to allow
third parties to sell photographs of current student athletes in the
same manner as the sale of highlights and media guides has been
defeated.
NCAA Rationale:
Many athletics departments contract with individuals to serve as
staff photographers. These individuals provide the photos for media
guides, promotional materials, website use, etc. In this day and
age of digital photography, many of these photographers have websites set up to sell their photographs to individuals for personal
use. These websites are controlled by the photographer and are
maintained separately from any institution. Current legislation
prohibits the sale of these photos by anyone other than the member
institution. By allowing institutions to specifically designate
another party to sell and distribute photographs from the
individual's website in a manner similar to that for media guides
and highlight films, institutions can avoid the cost and time
involved with funneling the sale of these photographs through the
institution. This legislation would only apply to the sale of
photographs (as opposed to any other commercial item) and is
consistent with recent interpretations issued by NCAA Division I
Legislative Review/Interpretations Committee.
For further information on this
ruling, please contact CI's business affairs staff.
NFL NETWORK TO AIR GAME "REPLAYS"
